Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Little Rock, South Carolina. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, our expert team specializes in hair testing with available testing centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized screenings.

In recent times, drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle tests over traditional methods. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests rather than the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle exams suit employers with zero-tolerance drug policies and individuals on probation. The chief advantage is a longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, and it's notably tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing filament. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of roughly 90 days for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hairs (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred specimen for analysis. For EtG, supplements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair are exclusively about scalp hair. Body hair includes other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key phases in the lab analysis of a drug test which are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample within the lab’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a rapid preliminary test for drugs. Although Screening is cost-efficient to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result must be verified for legal purposes. Samples suspected to be positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening results must be confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process—from Accessioning to Confirmation—is audited according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine examinations with narrower detection periods.
  • Cheating challenges: Manipulating hair drug analyses is quite tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Traces consumption history: It tracks drug use patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically more costly than alternative testing forms.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Little Rock, SC demonstrates clear advantages over traditional urine tests. Enhanced detection accuracy and reliability set it apart. While urine tests reveal recent drug use, hair analysis uncovers a broader scope over a longer period, making it a superior choice for employers seeking comprehensive substance use assessments.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing in Little Rock, SC is unmatched. Capable of revealing drug use for up to 90 days, it provides employers with a holistic view of an individual's substance history. This longer timeframe grants a clearer understanding of an employee's or applicant's long-term habits and reliability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Little Rock, SC are inherently tamper-resistant. The collection process and nature of hair samples make it significantly harder to alter results, providing reliable outcomes. This reduces the risk of adulteration and ensures integrity in drug testing, offering peace of mind with unquestionable accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
