Accredited Drug Testing offers an all-inclusive hair follicle drug testing service in Lodge, South Carolina. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is adept at hair screening and boasts testing facilities in every city nationwide capable of performing hair assessments. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is generally required. Hair tests facilitate drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing analyses.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle assessments are employed by employers with stringent no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probationary entities. A paramount advantage of hair testing is its extended drug detection window, typically lasting up to 90 days, alongside a supervised collection process which ensures high integrity. For drug use detection within a shortened timeframe, like the past 5 days, urine testing still holds superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-lasting record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages involved in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab’s database. This process includes verifying that the specimen was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening needs to be verified for court acceptance. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging techniques to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thereby making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and unique differences in hair development can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
