Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle assessments in Luray, South Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. Hair follicle analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

In recent years, the preference for drug testing has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle analyses. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle evaluations are essential for entities with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and people under probation. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, through an observed collection, minimizing fraud potential. Yet, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective measure for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a chronicling tool for the ingestion of substances by preserving biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can reveal usage data for substances like alcohol for up to around three months. The sample collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is considered optimal for initial screenings and confirmations. To cover EtG tests and/or assessments surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of hair is needed. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is advisable. In cases where scalp hair isn’t present, a comparable volume of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair apply specifically to scalp hair. All other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.) are categorized as body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the primary integration of the sample into the lab’s system. This phase includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry that an electronic custody system may not offer.

Screening offers an initial, rapid evaluation for substance misuse. Though cost-efficient in dismissing drug presence for most specimens, confirmation is necessary for a positive Screening for legal acceptability. Samples with presumed positive results in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumably positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn at a much lower concentration from hair than is typical with systems such as urine or oral fluid, which is why hair drug testing is a particularly complex procedure.

Any positive results from the Screening are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. Every stage, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing has the ability to identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a reduced detection scope.
  • Difficulty in adulteration: Hair drug tests are notoriously hard to tamper with, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical data provision: Hair testing can illustrate a consumption trend over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detectable drug levels in hair generally require 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than alternative methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair hue and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the examination is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
