Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Lynchburg, South Carolina. Whenever you require a hair drug or alcohol test, turn to Accredited Drug Testing, noted for its expertise in hair testing, with facilities spread across all cities nationwide ready to administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is required, although body hair is a valid alternative. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a standard method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer a hair drug test over the conventional urine test. Organizations with stringent no-drug policies, legal entities, and probation services primarily use hair follicle drug tests. The advantage lies in their extended detection span, typically 90 days, collected under supervision, and are nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands can encapsulate long-term records of alcohol and illicit substances by securing biomarkers within the fibers as they grow. When gathered from near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window for drugs and alcohol stretching up to roughly 3 months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipment is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of about 200 strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" implies all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial intake into a lab’s system. This phase involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not integrated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples; however, for judicial admissibility, a positive screen requires confirmation. Samples yielding presumptively positive results in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screen result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples receive a cleansing wash as needed before confirmation. The entire lab process—from Accessioning to Confirmation—is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, while urine tests accommodate a briefer detection range.
  • Resistance to fraud: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, promoting accuracy in results.
  • Correlates historic usage patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug use, reflecting not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs generally require about 5-7 days to manifest within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends toward higher costs relative to alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth discrepancies can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often dubbed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing provides several advantages over traditional urine tests, starting with its excellent detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which are often limited to identifying recent drug use, hair testing covers a longer timeframe and highlights patterns of substance use. As a result, stakeholders benefit from a comprehensive overview of an individual's lifestyle choices, essential for informed decision-making.

Extended Detection Window

Employers benefit from the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing, which can identify drug use from the past 90 days. This significant advantage allows companies to have deeper insights into potential candidates or current employees' substance use history. With a comprehensive view of the individual's behavioral trends, employers are better equipped to make informed hiring or management decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing is its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests are less susceptible to sample adulteration, providing trustworthy and definitive results. This level of reliability ensures that outcomes remain unchallenged, granting employers and judicial entities peace of mind regarding the validity of test outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
