Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Marietta, South Carolina. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we're specialists in hair testing and operate facilities nationwide, including in every city. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body is required. Our tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly involve hair follicle checks. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Organizations have zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services favor this method. The key advantage is an extended detection period of up to 90 days, with observed, cheat-resistant collections. However, for use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, it offers an extensive history of substance use. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A cut of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred specimen amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for measurement is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test result consists of four vital stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a specimen into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the specimen is properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift assessment for drug presence. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate most samples for drug use, any positive results require confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that indicate a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further verification.

If Screening identifies a presumptive positive sample, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Verification of any positive results from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and endorsed to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly improbable, thus results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Marietta, SC is evident. Hair analysis triumphs with greater detection accuracy and reliability compared to traditional urine tests. It provides a broader detection window, identifying substance use over a lengthy period, thus painting a fuller picture of an individual's habits.

Urine tests fall short in terms of tamper resistance and detection duration. Hair testing circumvents these issues, providing employers with dependable, less susceptible alternatives for enforcing drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

The Extended Detection Window offered by hair follicle testing in Marietta, SC, spans up to 90 days, allowing employers to gain insights into long-term substance use. This extended window is superior in evaluating an applicant's or employee's history, providing a comprehensive overview that other testing methods cannot match.

Long-lasting visibility into an individual's drug use patterns ensures better decision-making regarding hiring and maintaining a safe, substance-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Utilizing a Tamper-Resistant Testing Method like hair follicle tests in Marietta, SC, effectively reduces the risk of sample adulteration. Hair tests are notable for their resilience against manipulation, ensuring results that are both reliable and unequivocal.

Such methods provide assurance to employers, courts, and individuals that the results reflect true substance use, free from interference typically present in other testing forms.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
