Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in McConnells, South Carolina. If your requirement is a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair assessments, with centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct the examination. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body may be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug examination is increasingly used in drug testing methods. It's preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over conventional urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers, legal authorities, and probation officers often prefer hair tests. Their benefit lies in the longer detection period for substance use, lasting up to 90 days, collected under observation, and being nearly impossible to manipulate. Yet, for identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for detecting substance use, offering a timeline of use by securing biomarkers in the hair as it grows. When obtained next to the scalp, hair offers roughly a three-month period for detecting alcohol and drug use. Acquiring hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches (or about 200 strands, akin to a #2 pencil diameter) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for detailed screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accurate measurement. Should scalp hair be absent, equivalent body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair references other varieties (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process encompasses four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with integrating a sample into laboratory systems, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a laboratory accessioning number (LAN), and completing any required data entry beyond the capabilities of electronic chain custody systems.

Screening serves as an initial check for substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug intake in most cases, court-admissible results require confirmatory testing. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Positive Screening findings undergo confirmation utilizing techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positives are cleaned prior to Confirmatory analysis as needed. The laboratory procedure, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designations and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can sense drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Testing integrity: Cheating a hair drug test proves highly challenging, promoting result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It delivers a drug use pattern over time rather than just detecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetected: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being often termed "hair follicle tests”, these tests evaluate the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
