Certified Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Modoc, South Carolina. Whether you're seeking drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, we specialize in hair tests and maintain clinics nationwide, including locally. Typically, samples from 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on head or body are used. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various specialized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in screening processes. Employers, legal authorities, and addiction specialists now often favor hair tests over urine tests. Businesses with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals rely on hair tests. A key advantage is the extended detection window, which spans up to 90 days, through a monitored process that's challenging to manipulate. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the benchmark.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair covers all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This involves confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening includes an initial swift inspection for drugs of misuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs verification to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can discover drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which feature a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to circumvent: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a drug use pattern over a timeframe, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
