Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Monetta, South Carolina. For hair drug or alcohol tests, our company specializes in hair analyses with locations nationwide, ensuring accessible testing. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body is generally required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing options.

The practice of drug testing increasingly favors hair follicle testing in recent years. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals opt for a hair test versus a traditional urine test. This method is employed by companies with strict drug policies, the judicial system, and those under probation. Hair follicle testing's key advantage is its longer detection span, up to 90 days, with supervised collection, making cheating highly unlikely. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most effective for recent, within-5-day, drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a substantial means for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair retains a longitudinal record of alcohol and various drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the developing hair. When taken near the scalp, a hair sample can indicate up to a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for both screening and verification. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Lab processing for a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift check for drug abuse. While it is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair in this stage at a reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate method to execute.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The total lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair marking and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection frame.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to alter, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: Offers a drug usage pattern over time, more than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug tests.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
