Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive options for hair follicle drug testing services in Murphys Estates, SC. For individuals requiring hair or alcohol tests, we excel in this area with our centers dispersed across all cities nationally, ready to handle hair testing needs. Hair length must be 1.5 to 2 inches, utilizing either head or body hair in most situations. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more specialized testing adaptations.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for detecting substance use. It is increasingly favored by employers, judicial systems, and professionals specializing in substance misuse, replacing the traditional urine tests. These tests are instrumental for employers adhering to strict no-drug-use policies, legal settings, and for monitoring individuals on probation. A hair follicle test offers a considerable advantage with its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, involves direct supervision during sample collection, and is virtually defeat-proof. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying very recent drug usage within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. The fibers of a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, offering a long-term history of substance use. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence up to roughly 3 months back. Hair samples are straightforward to collect, not easy to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch sample containing about 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair specify scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental stages in lab processing for a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into a lab system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. All samples indicating a presumptive positive during Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening remains one of the most complex methodologies.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can provide a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
