Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Newry, South Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have fully equipped testing centers across all U.S. cities ready to conduct a hair test. Generally, you'll require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Our hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG or accommodate specific testing requests.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favored method for drug screening. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies on drug use, courts, and those overseeing individuals on probation. The key advantage is the extended detection time for drug use, typically up to 90 days, reliable under observation, and nearly impossible to alter. Yet, for substances used within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant instrument for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair growth. When retrieved near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month window of detection for substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, the equivalent quantity of body hair might be used. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to the remaining hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an introductory examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening needs confirmation to be court admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples testing presumptively positive are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Newry, SC, hair follicle testing stands out for its superior detection capabilities over traditional urine tests. This method reveals drug use over a more extended period, elevating its accuracy and reliability. Employers often prefer this approach due to its ability to provide a comprehensive snapshot of a person's substance history over many months.

When comparing hair testing to urine testing, the precise detection windows and minimal chances of tampering make hair tests a more reliable option. While urine tests are still used for recent drug use, hair tests give a broader overview, making it ideal for long-term substance detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
