Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Norway, South Carolina. Specializing in hair tests, the company provides both alcohol and drug analysis, with locations available nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically needed to conduct these tests. This method is capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has gained traction in recent years and is now often preferred over urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. Particularly beneficial for its extended detection window, up to 90 days, this test is utilized by those who enforce strict drug-free policies. Its observed collection process and resistance to tampering make it highly reliable, though urine tests remain most effective for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended chronology of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can present up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drug substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG and other tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be provided, an equivalent amount of body hair may be obtained. When addressing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair covers all other types of hair (i.e., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This procedure involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method of ruling out drug use for most samples, a positive screening result necessitates further confirmation to be court-acceptable. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is ISO / IEC 17025 accredited.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can detect substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistant to cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: Provides an overview of drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually costs more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Individual differences such as hair color and growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", it’s important to note that the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Outperforms Urine Tests
In Norway, SC, hair follicle testing stands out for its exceptional reliability and accuracy compared to urine tests. While traditional urine tests detect recent drug use, hair testing provides a broader detection window, capturing an extended period of substance use. This comprehensive view ensures informed decisions based on a more extensive substance use history.

Benefits Over Traditional Urine Tests
The longer detection period of hair follicle tests, which can identify substance use for up to 90 days, offers a significant advantage over urine tests. It provides employers and legal entities the assurance of a more accurate representation of an individual's drug use pattern, making it a valuable tool for maintaining workplace safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Period for Substances

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
