Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Olar, South Carolina. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this field and operates testing centers throughout the entire nation capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside bespoke testing alternatives.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become part of the standard approach for conducting drug assessments. Employers, judicial systems, and professionals in Substance Abuse are opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle drug tests serve employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial entities, and probationary cases. A major advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection span for up to 90 days, within an observed collection procedure, significantly reducing the chance of tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for drug usage detection within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have gained recognition as a robust mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows, hair offers a prolonged history of substances. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's diameter) from closest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, extras, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, we solely refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a lab comprises four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the laboratory's system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any missing data not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that render a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted at lower concentrations than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), thus rendering hair drug screening a challenging process.

Confirmation of any positive screen is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed as needed prior to confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to evasion: It's exceptionally challenging to falsify a hair drug test, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical usage insight: Offers a detailed pattern of drug use over a time frame rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Despite common reference as "hair follicle tests", the actual examination involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
