Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing operates in Pauline, South Carolina. Whether you require a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in hair testing with facilities Nationwide ready to assist. Generally, a sample length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is adequate. We offer drug, alcohol/ETG, and bespoke testing through hair analysis.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has surged, offering an alternative to conventional urine tests. Employers, legal authorities, and substance misuse specialists often choose hair tests. Their zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, and probation checks benefit from their extended detection time—up to 90 days—secured via supervised collection, making it almost impossible to falsify. However, urine tests remain the best choice if you need to identify drug activity within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can encapsulate a long-term history of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is uncomplicated, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of about 200 strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil), yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of generating a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating the sample into the lab system. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although it offers a cost-effective way to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive finding requires confirmation to be legally defensible. Any samples with presumptively positive results in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This stage removes drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug analysis the most challenging to perform.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, more than the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably challenging, hence increasing the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical usage insight: Provides evidence of a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Substances require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Financial aspect: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pauline, SC, when comparing drug testing methods, hair follicle testing proves superior to traditional urine testing. Its capability to detect drug use over an extended period ensures superior accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which mainly detect recent activity, hair analysis provides a broader view, capturing usage that may have occurred months prior, creating a detailed substance use profile.

The superior accuracy of hair testing lies in its extensive detection window and resistance to falsification. This broad detection spans up to 90 days, making the results more trustworthy than urine tests, which are susceptible to tampering. Employers thus find hair testing a reliable option, adhering to higher standards of drug policy enforcement.

Extended Detection Window

In Pauline, SC, hair follicle testing offers an extensive detection window that spans up to 90 days. This far surpasses the typical timeframe of urine tests, allowing employers and other stakeholders to gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual's drug habits. Such an extended period provides clarity beyond the immediate past, revealing longer-term usage patterns.

Having access to an applicant's or employee's substance history over an extended period offers invaluable insights into their potential behavior and reliability. With hair follicle testing, employers can make informed hiring choices and monitor current employees, ensuring their workforce maintains a professional and safe environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In the realm of drug testing in Pauline, SC, hair follicle tests shine as a tamper-resistant method. The integrity of this testing form minimizes the risk of adulteration compared to other methods such as urine tests. By using a collected sample directly from the individual in a supervised setting, it significantly reduces opportunities for individuals to alter results dishonestly.

This secure testing method offers a level of reliability that is crucial for employers and organizations who rely on accurate results to make informed decisions. Knowing the test outcomes are unquestionable ensures peace of mind, protecting both the organization and its employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
