Complete hair follicle drug testing services are offered by Accredited Drug Testing across Pinopolis, South Carolina. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched, with testing sites in every city nationwide. For a hair test, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body hair is generally needed. Specialized hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other desired substances.

Recently, the practice of drug screening has increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer these over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probation authorities. A significant advantage is the extended detection time of these tests, offering a 90-day drug use history. Although urine tests are unmatched for detecting recent drug use within five days, hair tests are observed during collection, making them tamper-proof.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. The strands capture a historical record of alcohol and drug use by securing biomarkers within the fibers. Hair collected close to the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to approximately three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and transports effortlessly.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG testing, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the hair. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may substitute. References to head hair denote only scalp hair. Body hair spans all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core processes in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary processing of a sample into the lab's framework. This consists of confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any other data inputs not furnished by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo further verification.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the baseline specimen and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at a diminished concentration relative to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug assessment the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positively screened samples is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thereby guaranteeing more precise outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It offers a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While denoted as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing in Pinopolis, SC include improved detection and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
