Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive solutions for hair follicle drug testing in Pomaria, South Carolina. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. With testing facilities available in cities across the country, a hair test can be conveniently administered. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is enough for testing. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent as an effective method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are increasingly turning to hair tests as opposed to the standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers favor hair testing due to the extended detection window—up to 90 days—along with the observed collection process, which limits cheating. Nevertheless, urine tests remain most reliable for detecting short-term drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeline of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's diameter) from the proximity of the scalp will yield 100 mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirming. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150 mg of the sample is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair only. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in legal circumstances. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test positive presumptively in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are drawn out of hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to undertake.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, which enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Historical usage data: It provides usage patterns over time, rather than only detecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests in Pomaria, SC, the former emerges as superior due to its exceptional detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
