Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rion, South Carolina. Our expertise in hair testing, coupled with a network of testing centers in cities across the nation, allows us to cater to your needs for hair drug or alcohol tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used for analysis, covering drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

The application of hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in recent years. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. This preference is due to the extended detection period of up to 90 days provided by hair tests, the observed collection process, and their resistance to cheating. Despite this advantage, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent substance use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation stages. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen weighing. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test result in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a sample is entered into the lab’s system. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data inputs that aren't provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of an initial rapid drug of abuse test. Although Screening is cost-effective for discounting drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation before being court-admissible. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the main sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from the hair at a much lower concentration than found in other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing the most challenging method.

Positive Screening results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive get washed before confirmation as needed. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, contrasting with shorter detection periods in urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows usage trend: It reflects a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require about 5-7 days post-use to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Rion, SC eclipses urine tests with its extended detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair samples reveal substance use over a more extended timeframe, offering unmatched insight into drug history. This advantage helps in making informed decisions that align with zero-tolerance policies, thus safeguarding the integrity of workplaces and judicial processes.

The observed collection process of hair testing eliminates chances of cheating, unlike urine tests, which are susceptible to tampering. This secure method further cements its position as the superior choice in drug testing, trusted by employers and legal entities alike.

Extended Detection Window

With a detection window of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Rion, SC provides a thorough assessment of an individual's substance use history. This prolonged period captures a comprehensive picture, invaluable for employers assessing current or prospective employees' commitment to maintaining a drug-free lifestyle.

By looking back three months, hair testing extends beyond the limitations of other methods, like urine testing, which typically covers a much shorter period. This broader scope assists employers in making informed decisions and effectively implementing drug-free policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Rion, SC are significantly tamper-resistant, reducing the chances of sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, which can be easily manipulated, hair samples are collected in a monitored setting, ensuring the integrity of the sample and providing results that are reliable and unquestionable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
