Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Rowesville, South Carolina. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with test centers in every city nationwide to carry out the procedure. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body can be used. Hair tests are available for drug analysis, alcohol/ETG tracking, or tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent years for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are mandated by zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and for those on probation. The advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection make it nearly foolproof. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still hold higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are increasingly recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a prolonged archive of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the advancing hair strand. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for delivery.

A section measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and confirmation tests. For tests such as EtG, extensions, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. When we refer to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test outcome involves four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a specimen into a lab's system. This process involves confirming that the specimen was correctly sealed and dispatched, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening employs an initial rapid assessment for potential drug use. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage in most specimens, any positive result needs verification for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumable positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are pulled from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection period.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It offers insights into drug consumption trends over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative testing approaches.
  • Diversity in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence the level of drug metabolites found in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
