Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance screening in Russellville, South Carolina. If you're seeking a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities nationwide. Testing typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various other substances through tailored hair testing methods.

Over recent years, there's been a growing preference for hair follicle drug testing. Many organizations, including employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation departments favor these tests due to their extensive detection window—up to 90 days. Conducted under direct observation, these tests are notably difficult to manipulate. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise approach.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a vital instrument for uncovering the use of drugs and alcohol. The hair encapsulates a prolonged historical record of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch batch consisting of about 200 strands of hair (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for examination and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When indicating head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s database. This encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entries not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assay for the presence of illicit substances. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to discard drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be permissible in legal proceedings. All samples that are presumably positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

In the event a sample is deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and prepared for Extraction. During this procedure, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations more minute than in alternative methods (i.e., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most intricate methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening finding is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug examinations can detect substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which possess a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Yields historical data: It can demonstrate a timeline of drug consumption over an extended timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual disparities in hair development can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Even though frequently called "hair follicle tests," the examination actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
