In Salters, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this specialty, with locations nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Options for drug, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair tests are available.

Recently, the hair follicle test has become more prevalent in drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often require hair tests over urine tests. Hair tests are preferred by those with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation cases. The main advantage is their extended detection time, up to 90 days, gathered in an observed process, and they are extremely difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is acknowledged as an effective method for identifying the use of substances. Hair retains long-term evidence of substance and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for substances and alcohol. It is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for initial and confirmatory testing. For testing EtG, add-ons, or panels greater than 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. Note that head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab procedure for processing a drug test result includes four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of entering a sample into the lab’s system. This process involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not available through an electronic custody chain system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick analysis for substance use. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result must be validated to be usable in legal proceedings. Samples with tentative positive Screening results necessitate further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive findings in the Screening phase, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a reduced concentration compared to other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging method to execute.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All tentative positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as indicated. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Successfully manipulating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Records historic use data: Offers insights into patterns of substance use over time, instead of just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically higher in cost compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth impact the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Salters, SC

  • Hair tests offer exceptional detection accuracy compared to urine tests.
  • They provide reliable results, crucial for employers enforcing drug policies.
  • The analysis covers a longer period, catching occasional use missed by urine tests.
  • They eliminate the risk of sample tampering commonly associated with urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

In Salters, SC, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, effectively showcasing substance use history up to 90 days. This capability offers employers a thorough review of an individual's substance habits over time.

Unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period, hair follicle tests reveal comprehensive drug use patterns. This extended observation window is crucial for informed hiring and management decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
