Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing across Sans Souci, South Carolina. For hair or alcohol testing needs, we specialize in hair analysis and have numerous testing facilities nationwide, ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. Our hair tests are suitable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle analysis. This method is favored by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. It is especially preferred by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is its extended drug detection timeframe of up to 90 days, while still being monitored, and difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized for its effectiveness in detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of about 200 strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completes any supplementary data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a quick initial assessment for drugs of abuse. It is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, though a confirmed result is needed for court admissibility. Samples that screen presumptively positive require a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug screening’s complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that presumptively test positive undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to tamper with: Hair drug tests are tough to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: They provide a timeline of drug consumption, reflecting not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often costs more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
