At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right here in Saxon, South Carolina. If you require drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available across every city in the nation for your convenience. Generally, test subjects need about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for analysis. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or made-to-order testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more popular method over traditional tests. Many businesses, legal courts, and substance specialists now prefer a hair test to urine analysis. Hair tests are ideal for organizations with rigorous no-drug policies, judicial departments, and for those on probation, offering an extended detection window up to 90 days. Observed collection guarantees accuracy, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, urine tests are most reliable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust tool for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair offers an extended record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When closely cut to the scalp, hair can indicate substance use up to roughly a three-month span for drugs and alcohol. Hair is effortlessly gathered, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, enhancements, or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the hair. If scalp hair cannot be used, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referencing scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is entered into a lab's system. This step entails ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick check to detect drug abuse. While this is an efficient way to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result needs further confirmation to be allowed in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is provisionally positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at notably lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to undertake.

Confirmation of a positive screen result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are sanitized before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screens can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine screens have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers past usage data: It provides a timeline of drug usage across an extended period, not merely the most recent instance.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variable results: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself and not the follicle underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Saxon, SC, hair testing outshines traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy. This advanced method traces drug history up to 90 days, far exceeding the limited window of urine analysis. Hair samples, collected under observation, virtually eliminate the risk of tampering, enhancing test integrity.

Employers and agencies prefer hair evaluation for its extensive history range. Unlike urine, where fleeting substance presence might be missed, hair retains markers of drug use, offering a clear, reliable snapshot of an individual's substance involvement over months.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests, available in Saxon, SC, uniquely capture substance use up to three months past, offering employers a thorough view of an individual's history. Detecting drug residues in hair provides insights unreachable by other methods.

The hair test's extended window of detection is perfect for organizations aiming to understand long-term substance habits. This widespread view complements policies promoting continued sobriety, making it a valuable tool in many employment screenings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
