Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance use. The strands of hair encapsulate bio-markers over time, reflecting a prolonged record of drug or alcohol consumption. When clipped close to the scalp, a detection period of around three months for various substances is possible. Hair sampling is straightforward, resilient against tampering, and easily transportable.
Collecting a 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs (around a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both initial screening and confirmations. For extended panel tests or EtG assessments, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the hair sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. Office head hair specifically references scalp hair, while body hair includes all other forms (e.g., facial, axillary).
Process Overview
The drug test in the laboratory follows four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning involves queuing the sample into the laboratory's records. This step includes checking the sample's packaging and transportation integrity, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.
Screening consists of an initial assessment for misuse drugs. Despite being a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use on most samples, a positive finding needs further validation for legal acceptability. Any sample flagged as possibly positive during Screening requires secondary verification.
For samples flagged as possibly positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction stage. Here, drug substances are drawn from the hair at considerably lower concentrations than seen in methods like urine or saliva samples, emphasizing the complexity of hair drug analysis.
Positive results in the Screening stage undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Positive samples are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning through to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.
