Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing serves Southern Shops, South Carolina. If you're seeking a hair alcohol or drug test, our expertise lies in hair analysis with centers nationwide empowered to conduct these tests. A typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored testing solutions.

In the past years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug testing. Various entities like employers, courts, and Substance Abuse authorities now opt for hair tests over traditional urine testing. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationary contexts leverage hair follicle tests for their extended detection capabilities, spanning up to 90 days, alongside their resistance to manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more effective for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day span.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing has evolved into recognizing it as a robust instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the volume of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimum quantity for initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional assays, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test outcome in the laboratory is divided into four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be admissible in court. Any samples that presumptively test positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation step.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over a timeline, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp
