Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stateburg, South Carolina. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we provide access to testing centers across all cities nationwide. For a hair test, individuals typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside custom hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become standard for drug testing procedures in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often choose hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, probationary individuals, and courts utilize these tests for their substantial advantage: they detect drug use over a 90-day period, are observed, and resist tampering. Urine tests remain accurate for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent means to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lengthy record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers in its growing strands. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and painless to transport.

An inch-and-a-half specimen of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. Lacking scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair might be sourced. Head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the forefront processing of a specimen within a lab's framework. Tasks include affirming the sample's proper sealing and delivery, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial check for substances of abuse. While an economical approach to dismiss drug consumption in most cases, a positive screen demands validation for court admissibility. Any samples flagged as presumptive in Screening necessitate a further check.

Should a sample prove presumptive in the Screening, additional hairs are extracted from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. Here, substances are removed from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging procedure.

Endorsement of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptively positive samples receive washing as required. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the validation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug screenings can spot drug use for as much as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited timeframe.
  • Challenging to alter: It is exceptionally hard to deceive a hair drug screening, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Reveals usage trends: It provides a depiction of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug screenings are typically pricier than other test types.
  • Inconsistencies in findings: Variables such as hair shade and personal growth patterns can influence drug metabolite presence in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair shaft, not the follicle embedded beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
