Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments throughout Townville, South Carolina. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, available across our national network of centers. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the scalp or body. Testing can detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing protocols increasingly favor hair follicle exams. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse authorities often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method benefits organizations with zero-drug-tolerance, legal institutions, and monitored individuals, offering up to a 90-day detection period with observed sample collection, which is challenging to manipulate. Yet, urine tests remain precise for usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a long-term record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair provides a detection timeframe of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we are specifically talking about scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory's system. This phase includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to make it admissible in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do require follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. This laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: Hair tests can establish a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing excel over urine tests in Townville, SC? For starters, hair testing can identify drug use over an extended period, providing greater accuracy. Urine tests are limited by shorter detection times. Thus, hair analyses stand out for their reliability and comprehensive detection capabilities, making them superior in monitoring substance use effectively.

Extended Detection Window

In Townville, SC, hair follicle testing is remarkable for its extended detection window. Unlike other tests, it spots substances up to 90 days prior. This lengthier scope allows employers a thorough view of an individual’s historical drug usage. The prolonged detection enhances workplace dues diligence while helping in making informed hiring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the strongest features of hair follicle testing is its resistance to tampering within Townville, SC.

  • Samples are difficult to adulterate

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
