In Valley Falls, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our nationwide network of testing centers can fulfill your needs for a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other bespoke options.

In recent times, the increasing preference for hair follicle drug testing is notable. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair testing over traditional urine testing. This method is favored for zero-tolerance employers, legal bodies, and probation mandates. The primary advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, under observed collection, making it almost foolproof. Yet, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use events within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches and approximately 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimum quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, more comprehensive panels, and tests beyond ten panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional manual data entry not incorporated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-effective way to eliminate drug use in the majority, a positive result demands confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation step.

If a sample is indication-positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process, where substances are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for a span of up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have limited detection durations.
  • Hard to falsify: It is notably challenging to compromise a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inadequate for detecting recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to emerge in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
