In Vance, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. If you require drug or alcohol testing, our team specializes in hair-based tests, and we have numerous testing facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, a sample size of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. These tests can identify the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analysis options.

The last few years have seen a rise in the use of hair follicle drug tests for substance detection. These tests are increasingly preferred over standard urine tests by employers, legal authorities, and addiction specialists. Such tests appeal to employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation for their prolonged detection timeframe, extending up to 90 days. Hair follicle tests are gathered under supervision, making them hard to tamper with. However, for detecting drugs used within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as an extended chronological archive of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fiber. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer about a three-month period for alcohol and drug detection. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately matching the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, supplemental panels, and/or panels exceeding 10, collecting 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing of the hair. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial incorporation of a sample within a lab's framework. It entails confirming the sample was securely sealed and sent correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid scan for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical strategy to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a screen turning positive must be verified for it to stand in legal proceedings. All samples with a presumptive positive outcome in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When samples show a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than those in other methods (like urine or oral fluids), underscoring why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed. Every phase from Accessioning to Confirmation in the laboratory is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timespan: Hair drug examinations can reflect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Chances of cheating a hair drug test are minimal, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical drug usage data: Offers insights into drug use patterns over an extended timeframe, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Not for immediate detection: It typically requires around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense factor: Hair drug tests usually entail higher costs than other drug examination methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and distinct growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand rather than the follicle laser focus beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Superiority of Hair Testing in Vance, SC

Hair follicle tests in Vance, SC, present numerous advantages over conventional urine tests. They provide a much broader detection window, making it possible to identify substance use over several months rather than just days. The increased accuracy and reliability of hair tests ensure a comprehensive approach to drug testing for all stakeholders involved.

Enhanced Detection and Reliability

The expanded detection timeframe of hair testing makes it an ideal method for organizations and individuals seeking thorough substance use history. Unlike urine tests, which may miss shorter-term use, hair tests offer a true reflection of an individual's habits over time, thus delivering superior detection accuracy.

Extended Detection Window

Prolonged Detection Period in Vance, SC

Hair follicle testing offers an extensive detection window, covering up to 90 days of drug use history. This feature is instrumental for employers in Vance, SC, needing a complete view of a candidate or employee's substance use. The prolonged analysis period provides insights that other testing methods, such as urine tests, cannot.

A Comprehensive View of Substance History

In contrast to short-term detection methods such as urine tests, hair follicle testing extends a more robust and detailed examination. For employers in Vance, SC, this longer detection window translates to more informed decisions regarding hiring or continued employment, fostering a safer workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Secure Testing Procedures in Vance, SC

Hair follicle testing significantly minimizes the chance of sample tampering, ensuring credible and unquestionable results. This method of testing stands as a robust measure against sample adulteration, proving essential for accurate drug use screening in Vance, SC.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
