In Verdery, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. For those needing hair or alcohol testing, this service excels in specialized hair analysis with nationwide centers capable of administering these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. The tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various custom options.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method over urine tests for drug detection. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests due to their zero-tolerance stance on drug use. These tests provide a longer detection window, often up to 90 days, and are collected under supervision, making them tough to alter. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly seen as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process in a laboratory for a drug test result includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed for it to be legally valid. Samples that are preliminary positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. In this step, drugs are extracted at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a preliminary positive result are washed before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
