Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Wade Hampton, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug and alcohol tests. As experts in the field, we provide specialized hair tests through our nationwide centers. For a successful test, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of your crown or other body hair is needed. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for drug screenings. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over the typical urine-based methods. Hair tests are crucial for employers with zero-tolerance policies, court cases, and probation monitoring. The key advantage is a broader detection window, usually up to 90 days, ensuring a nearly foolproof collection process. For detecting recent usage, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the optimal choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. The hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strands. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, optional tests, and/or evaluations over 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hairs (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for assessing a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial assimilation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach for eliminating drug use in most cases, a positive result must be validated to be legally admissible. Any samples with preliminary positive findings in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase extracts substances from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: This method can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although sometimes referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
