Providing top-tier hair follicle testing services in Woodruff, SC, Accredited Drug Testing offers complete solutions for hair drug or alcohol testing. With specialized expertise in hair testing, our facilities are available in cities nationwide, ready to perform the tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed; these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug screening methods. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days and the observed collection process, making it significantly harder to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective approach for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair, it offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug history. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal substance usage for a timeframe extending up to about three months. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of sample tampering, and it is simple to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch section with roughly 200 hair strands (approximating a #2 pencil's size) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a larger sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise specimen measurement. In cases where scalp hair is not accessible, equivalent quantities of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory undertakes four essential stages in processing results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample’s initial integration into the lab system. This step includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, providing it with a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening then conducts a swift preliminary examination for substances of abuse. While this cost-effective step helps exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive Screening result demands verification to be legally acceptable. Presumptive positive samples, therefore, necessitate further confirmation.

For samples yielding presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair from the original sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. In this phase, drug extraction from hair occurs at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underlining the complexity of hair drug testing procedures.

Verification of any positive screening result uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results are washed accordingly. The complete laboratory undergoes a thorough review process from Accessioning to Confirmation, adhering to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods, hair drug tests can track drug usage for as long as 90 days.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to manipulation, ensuring increased result accuracy.
  • Insight into usage trends: They offer insight into patterns of drug usage over time, beyond recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically require 5-7 days post-use to become traceable in hair samples.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these primarily analyze the hair strand itself—not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
