In Woodville, South Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require hair testing for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in this area and have nationwide testing centers ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body are needed. These tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing is more commonly being used. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs use hair tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation and nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for spotting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When the sample is taken close to the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, only scalp hair is meant. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (axillary, facial, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about integrating the initial sample into the lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for potential drug use. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result from screening must be verified for legal acceptance. Any samples showing presumptive positives during Screening are subject to further Confirmation.

For samples testing positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the preliminary sample for Extraction. In this process, drugs are withdrawn from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging method.

Verification of any positive screening is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before Confirmation as needed. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guideline and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, which enhances the reliability of the results.
  • Shows usage patterns: It delivers a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It usually takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
