In Albee, South Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair tests and operates testing centers across all cities nationwide. For most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are utilized by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage of hair drug tests is the extended detection period for drug use, generally up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, making it almost foolproof. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The examination of hair has emerged as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair preserves a lengthy record of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hairs (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and/or those above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial processing of a sample within a lab's system. This step ensures that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick analysis for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective strategy for excluding drug usage in many samples, a positive screen must be corroborated for court acceptability. Any samples that appear positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample tests positive during the Screening step, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Provides historical insight: It can show a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
