Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Arlington, South Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing caters to those needing hair alcohol or drug tests. Our speciality is hair analysis, with numerous centers across every city throughout the country capable of administering these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body suffices. Hair tests may analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific testing needs.

There has been an increasing trend towards using hair follicle drug tests for various purposes. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor them over conventional urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probationary personnel extensively utilize these tests. A significant advantage of hair testing is its ability to identify drug use over a period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it hard to manipulate. Yet, for assessing drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for uncovering substance and alcohol consumption. Hair affords a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the threads of the hair shaft as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 90-day period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair sample collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a number 2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for tests and verifications. For EtG, add-ons, or screenings beyond ten panels, a 150mg amount of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is present, an equal portion of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Processing Summary

The four essential phases in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a specimen in a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for illicit substances. Though Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage on most samples, a screen that is positive must be affirmed to be legally admissible. Any specimens that show a preliminary positive in Screening mandate further verification.

If a specimen is initially positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and set up for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably reduced levels compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screen outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples suggested to be positive are cleaned prior to verification if needed. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair stipulations and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely difficult to falsify results in a hair drug analysis, increasing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical info: It can illustrate a trend of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: Detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally cost more than alternative drug examination methods.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements like hair color and the unique characteristics of individual hair growth may influence the concentration of drug remnants in the hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually evaluates the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
