Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis in Aurora, South Dakota. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol assessments, we excel in these tests, with facilities across all US cities that conduct hair evaluations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized hair test options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over traditional methods. Employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly request these tests instead of regular urine analyses. They're favored by entities with strict drug policies, legal systems, and probationary contexts for their extended drug detection, spanning up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and challenging to manipulate. Yet, for recent drug use, urine tests remain most effective for detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has evolved into a potent means for discovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can demonstrate up to roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and uncomplicated to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the dimension of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for examination and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or figures beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. When addressing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal four phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a specimen within a lab’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary swift inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to negate drug use on most specimens, a positive screen must be affirmed to be permissible in court. Any specimens appearing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

In cases where a specimen is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lesser concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a cleansing prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which encompass a reduced detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a trend of drug use over a timeframe, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in Aurora, SD, with its superior detection capabilities. Offering more reliable results, hair tests are preferred due to their accuracy in identifying substances even after extended periods. Unlike traditional urine testing, hair analysis is less prone to evasion and delivers robust results.

The enhanced detection accuracy of hair testing makes it a preferred option for those who require dependable outcomes. With a longer detection window than urine testing, it effectively tracks drug use history, providing more insightful data. Moreover, its reliability surpasses conventional urine tests, making it indispensable for trustworthy diagnostics.

Extended Detection Window

In the realm of substance testing, hair follicle analysis shines with its extended detection window lasting up to 90 days in Aurora, SD. This comprehensive approach offers employers a panoramic view of an individual's substance use history, far exceeding what urine tests provide, which is often just a brief snapshot.

This prolonged detection period is invaluable for employers seeking to understand the long-term drug use patterns of potential hires or current staff. By covering a three-month period, they can make more informed decisions based on a clearer portrayal of substance habits, essentially enhancing the employment evaluation process.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests, conducted in Aurora, SD, dramatically curb the possibility of tampering, offering impregnable results. This testing method fortifies the integrity of the sample, making it highly resistant to adulteration attempts that frequently plague traditional tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
