Process Overview

In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most complex technique to execute.
Confirmation of any preliminary positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed,and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
