Accredited Drug Testing provides hair follicle drug testing services comprehensively in Avon, South Dakota. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair tests, with facilities available in every city nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair examinations are applicable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom test options.

In recent years, drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle evaluation. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair analysis over traditional urine exams. This adoption stems from the extended detection window—usually up to 90 days—captured through an observed procedure and difficult to manipulate. Conversely, for the last 5 days of drug use, urine examinations remain the reliable choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fiber of the expanding hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period for alcohol and drugs that extends up to around three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp constitutes 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When speaking of head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair comprises all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and forwarded, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result in screening requires confirmation to be valid in judicial contexts. Any samples suspected as positive in Screening demand a further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and set aside for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Harder to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand and does not analyze the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
