Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Badger, South Dakota. Whether you need a test for hair drug or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available nationally, including all cities. Generally, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation-related cases often rely on hair tests. A key advantage is their extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected through direct observation, making it difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting very recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized for its efficacy, hair testing is now considered a formidable instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged drug and alcohol usage history by clasping biomarkers within the fibers of the ascending hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) situated nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for assessment and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Employ a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair alone. Body hair includes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the lab entails four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial registration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring proper sample sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening features a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers an economical means to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

For samples that appear presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drug compounds are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening presents the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that appear presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized beneath both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine testing that offers a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, heightening result accuracy.
  • Yields historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, rather than only recent intake.

Constraints:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and unique hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
