Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Burdock, South Dakota. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, and we maintain centers across the nation, including all cities, capable of carrying out such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Analyses are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored assessments.

Over recent years, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests has become more common. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer these tests over traditional urine screens. Utilized in zero-tolerance policies, probation, and court directives, hair tests offer extended detection periods, typically 90 days, ensuring accurate and nearly infallible results, although urine tests remain preferable for usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has evolved into an exceptional method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair shaft captures biomarkers over extended periods, encapsulating a history of alcohol and drug use. When gathered near the scalp, it offers a detection window for up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and is convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches containing approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg - ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG enhancements, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to ascertain the specimen’s weight. In absence of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair is acceptable. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Overview of the Process

The process in a lab for determining a drug test’s outcome involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is incorporated into a lab’s system. This phase ensures that the sample has been correctly sealed and shipped, associates it with a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry not accommodated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Though cost-efficient for dismissing drug use in the majority of samples, a positive initial result must undergo confirmation for court approval. Samples suggesting positive results at the Screening stage necessitate further verification.

If the Screening indicates positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair with reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing as the most challenging technique.

For verification of any positive screening findings, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed. As needed, all suspect positive samples are washed before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards' accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a reduced detection time.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring higher result accuracy.
  • Reveals past use: It outlines a user’s drug consumption pattern over an extended timeframe, not just the immediate past.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to other testing modalities.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
