Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Draper, SD. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol screening, our national network of centers, including all cities, specializes in hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head is required, though body hair is often acceptable. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug screening practices. Many employers, legal systems, and professionals in the field of substance abuse increasingly prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probation officers favor hair tests. Their key advantage lies in the extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, observed under strict conditions, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for drug use detection within the past five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection timeframe of up to about 3 months for substance use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For assessments involving EtG, additional substances, and/or more than 10 panels, collecting 150mg is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. When referring to head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. It includes validating the appropriate sealing and dispatch of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input not submitted via an electronic custody chain.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for illicit substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage across most samples, court validity requires a positive screen to be corroborated. Samples with assumed positive Screening results necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. At this juncture, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations relative to alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral swabs), making hair drug evaluation the most complex procedure.

Verification of any Screening positive result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing prior to Confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, also attaining accreditation as per ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can identify drug uptake for as many as 90 days, in contrast to shorter urine test durations.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test result is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers chronological data: It outlines a drug usage trajectory over time, rather than merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: Detectability of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Outcome variations: Elements like hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can impact the presence of drug byproducts in hair.

Note: While colloquially termed "hair follicle tests", analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantage of hair follicle over urine testing in Draper, SD, is evident through its enhanced accuracy and reliability. Hair tests detect drug use over longer periods, unlike urine tests which are limited to recent use.

  • More difficult to manipulate or falsify results.
  • Longer detection periods for comprehensive history.

Employers relying on urine tests risk overlooking long-term substance use. In contrast, hair testing offers a broader window, ensuring thorough insights into individual behaviors and supporting more informed decision-making.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Draper, SD, is renowned for its extended detection window, capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior. This feature offers a complete view of an individual's substance history, valuable for employers assessing potential hires.

  • Extensive detection period surpasses many alternatives.
  • Facilitates rigorous background checks.

Employers benefit from insights into both recent and past substance use, which supports making informed employment decisions. This extensive window highlights hair testing's superiority over other methods with shorter detection times.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing is a tamper-resistant option in Draper, SD, minimizing the risk of adulteration. The difficulty in manipulating hair samples assures reliable and unambiguous results for all parties involved.

  • Significant reduction in potential sample tampering.
  • Ensures integrity of the testing process.

When secure and unquestionable results are paramount, hair testing is the preferred method. This process nearly eliminates the chance of yielding false negatives due to sample tampering, providing peace of mind in sensitive situations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
