Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing in Dupree, South Dakota. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, we specialize in hair testing with facilities available across Nationwide cities ready to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options for hair analysis.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent in drug testing methods. It's preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, the judiciary, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair testing is its prolonged detection period, which can span up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly impossible to falsify. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective instrument for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by retaining biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide approximately a 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial hair, armpit hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab procedure of processing a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the initial sample processing into the lab's system occurs. This step verifies the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a primary swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates presumptive positivity, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening results uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter timeframes of urine tests.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can illustrate a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It usually takes 5-7 days for drugs to become discoverable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
