Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Elkton, South Dakota. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on this method and offers test centers in cities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body hair can be used for the exams. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized options.

Lately, more drug tests involve hair follicle analysis instead of urine tests. Considered by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, hair drug tests are a viable alternative to the conventional urine analysis. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers often prefer these tests due to their longer detection window, up to 90 days, and their observed collection feature, which minimizes the chance of cheating. Nevertheless, for recent drug use assessment within 5 days, urine tests remain accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair acts as a comprehensive record for substances by incorporating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is taken close to the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol consumption over about a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, minimally susceptible to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides roughly 100mg, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a specimen into a lab’s system. This process ensures the specimen was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial cursory test for controlled substances. Although Screening efficiently determines the absence of drugs in most specimens, confirmed positives are needed for legal acceptability. Samples that test positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Upon obtaining a positive result at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this process, substances are removed from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug analysis one of the most complex methods.

Confirmation for any positive result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The lab activities from Accessioning to Confirmation are assessed following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screens can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, exceeding the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Low susceptibility to alteration: The reliability of hair drug testing is high as it is challenging to tamper with the results.
  • Historical substance usage data: It can illustrate a history of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used; however, the analysis focuses on the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Elkton, SD, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine analysis by providing a more reliable detection method. The accuracy of hair testing stands out, offering a better indication of drug use over time. Unlike urine tests, which may have a shorter detection window, hair tests provide comprehensive results, offering increased dependability.

Extended Detection Window

With the ability to identify substance use for up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Elkton, SD, offers a significant advantage over shorter-term detection methods. This extended window allows employers to gain a thorough understanding of an individual's drug history, providing insights that help in making informed decisions regarding employment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
