In Florence, South Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're seeking a test for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in hair analysis means reliable results, with testing facilities available across all cities Nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the head or body. Our hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle tests, often selected by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists over urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. Key advantages include an extended drug detection window—up to 90 days—through a monitored collection process, making it very difficult to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential method for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair strands capture a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage history spanning up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to falsify, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verifying. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample’s weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we mean specifically scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a specimen within a laboratory’s framework. This process includes ensuring the specimen was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entries that are not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for dismissing drug use in the majority of specimens, a positive result must be confirmed for legal credibility. Any specimens that show presumptive positivity in Screening need further verification.

If a specimen shows tentative positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly reduced concentration than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Every positive Screening outcome is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive specimens are cleansed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and holds accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are resistant to tampering, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It can depict drug consumption patterns over an extended duration, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the common reference as "hair follicle tests," these analyses evaluate the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
