Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Hosmer, South Dakota. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, we have expertise in hair testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary follow-ups favor this method. The key advantage of hair testing is its longer detection window of up to 90 days, observed closely during collection, and resistant to tampering. However, for evaluating recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug use by sealing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to determine the specimen weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it's specifically about scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test result consists of four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves ensuring the sample was securely sealed and shipped, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick test for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-saving method to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive result needs to be validated to be acceptable in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are pulled from hair at a much lower concentration than in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is almost impossible to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more reliable.
  • Shows usage patterns: It can outline an individual's drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hosmer, SD, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine tests. Precision and Reliability stand out as key benefits, capturing drug use data over a more extended period than urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
