In Iroquois, South Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in both hair and alcohol testing, our centers are located nationwide, enabling us to conduct hair tests efficiently. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary from the head or body. These tests can detect substances like drugs or alcohol/ETG, with other specialized options available.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained traction in recent years, becoming a preferred option over traditional urine tests. They're mandated by many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals due to their extensive detection period, up to 90 days. A hair test's collection process is supervised and almost foolproof, making it ideal for businesses with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers. However, urine tests remain best for short-term detection, specifically under 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair shaft. A sample taken near the scalp can reveal up to about a three-month history of alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10, 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advised. If scalp hair cannot be provided, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processes a drug test result through four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of entering a sample into the lab system. This stage ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any additional data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for drug abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most cases, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

A presumptive positive in the Screening stage leads to additional hair being extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, substances are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), presenting the greatest challenge in drug screening techniques.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive screening outcomes. Presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to adulterate: Hair tests are challenging to falsify, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reflects historical usage: They show drug use patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically costlier than other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Iroquois, SD, hair follicle tests surpass urine tests due to their enhanced detection capabilities. While urine tests focus on recent drug consumption, hair testing covers a broader timeline, unraveling drug use for up to 90 days. This makes it ideal for employers determined to maintain a drug-free environment. As a result, companies achieve greater accuracy and receive a clearer substance history, thus making informed decisions.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Iroquois, SD, benefit from an extended detection window provided by hair testing. This method effectively reveals substance use spanning as long as 90 days, offering a thorough evaluation of an individual's drug history. Businesses gain invaluable insights into potential or existing employees' habits, equipping them with comprehensive knowledge to support informed hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Iroquois, SD, stands out for its resistance to tampering. Its intrinsic design curtails the likelihood of sample manipulation, offering consistent and credible outcomes. The reliability of this method ensures employers can confidently base critical decisions on its findings, reducing concerns associated with sample deception or adulteration seen in other tests like urine sampling.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
