Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lodgepole, South Dakota. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol exam required, our expertise in such testing is extensive. Nationwide, our centers are equipped for hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Analyses may target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific requirements.

There has been a noticeable shift towards hair follicle tests for drug assessment in recent years. Employers, the court system, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair over urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial contexts, and probationary terms increasingly favor this method. The key advantage is the extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days. This method, difficult to circumvent, contrasts with the urine test’s accuracy for recent (past 5 days) drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's somewhat resistant to tampering, and it can be easily shipped.

A sample of 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, you may gather an equivalent quantity of body hair. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for generating a drug test result in a lab comprises four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. It includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an affordable method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples presumed positive during Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are taken from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is tough, yielding more reliable results.
  • Records historical data: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, unlike recent use detection.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lodgepole, SD, hair follicle testing edges out traditional urine tests by offering superior accuracy in substance detection. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
