Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing throughout Mansfield, South Dakota. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with testing facilities in every city Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body can be utilized. Hair tests provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, drug testing procedures have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts and probationary individuals, implement hair follicle tests. A significant advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection window for substance use, up to 90 days, collected under observation and nearly impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most effective for detecting drug usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures drug and alcohol biomarkers within the strand's fibers, creating a long-term record. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection time frame of up to around three months for drugs and alcohol. It's easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter), provides 100mg, which is optimal for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, equivalent body hair can be used. Head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes any other type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Lab processing of a drug test result includes these main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with integrating a sample into a lab's system, which involves checking the seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any needed data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use in many samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo another confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive at Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm any positive results from Screening. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is notably difficult, yielding more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: It provides a record of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect new use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Different hair colors and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
