In Nunda, South Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair drug testing. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities nationwide, including your city. Generally, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches is sufficient, be it from your crown or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored testing options.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is ideal for those enforcing strict drug-free policies, given its extended detection period—up to 90 days—observed collection, and minimal cheating risk. However, urine tests remain best for recent drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has grown in reputation as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimum sample for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming that the specimen was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical context: It can demonstrate a usage pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
