Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Ravinia, South Dakota. If you require a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair analysis and maintains testing centers in every city nationwide capable of conducting such tests. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair assessments can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Lately, hair follicle drug examinations have been increasingly adopted for drug screening. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers committed to zero-tolerance policies, judges, and probation officers widely utilize hair follicle exams. A significant advantage is its extended detection window for drug use—up to 90 days, with direct supervision during collection—making deception nearly impossible. Yet, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The structure of hair captures biomarkers within its fibers, offering a long-term record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair provides a historical range of approximately three months for detecting alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to adulterate, and convenient to transport.

A recommended sample size is 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) gathered close to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, specialized, and/or extensive panel tests exceeding 10, it's advised to procure 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be acquired. 'Head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Synopsis

The main procedural stages in handling a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial, rapid assessment for drug presence. Although cost-efficient in excluding drug use for most samples, positive results necessitate confirmation to be valid in court. Samples with presumed positives in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

For samples presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Any preliminary positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Efforts to falsify hair test results are difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Chronological data: Provides insight into drug consumption patterns over time, rather than merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs typically need 5-7 days post-consumption to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests can be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal variability in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly misnamed "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Ravinia, SD

Compared to urine testing, hair follicle testing demonstrates superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are common, they cannot match the extended detection periods and robustness of hair tests. This advanced testing method unveils a window into an individual's substance use history that urine tests simply cannot rival.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
