Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Roswell, South Dakota. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers are located in every major city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are necessary for testing. Our services include analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more prevalent method in drug screening processes. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers utilize it primarily because of the extended detection period of up to 90 days. This test is administered under observation, making tampering almost impossible. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for the detection of substance use. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. By collecting hair near the scalp, one can obtain a detection window of about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch lock of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additive tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it refers strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (face, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial handling of a sample within the laboratory’s system. This step confirms the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry not supplied by an electronic custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid test for drug substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples that test potentially positive in Screening require a confirmatory test.

Should a sample show a likely positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing the most complex procedure to carry out.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples are cleaned as necessary before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are quite hard to deceive, thus increasing result accuracy.
  • Chronological usage data: It offers a timeline of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests are usually costlier compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
