Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Running Water, South Dakota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in these tests, offering locations in all cities across the country where hair testing can be performed. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can target substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more common in drug testing procedures. Many workplaces, legal entities, and substance abuse counselors are favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers use hair follicle tests. The standout advantage is the extended detection period, capturing drug use up to 90 days, under supervision, and they're extremely hard to tamper with. Yet, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands retain biomarkers within their fibers as they grow, providing a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use over time. When extracted near the scalp, this method can identify drug and alcohol use for a period of up to three months. The collection process is easy, tampering is challenging, and shipping is straightforward.

A segment of 1.5 inches from roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields a 100mg sample, optimum for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Utilize a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes for delivering a drug test result include four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage, where a sample is processed into a lab system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, a preliminary check is performed to detect drugs of misuse. While it is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court validity. Any presumptive positive results from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample indicates a presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug testing is particularly challenging.

For Confirmation of any positive screen, methodologies like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug analysis can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which detect usage over shorter periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, which improves result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It depicts a timeline of drug use rather than indicating only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are generally pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis inspects the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
