Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Scenic, South Dakota. If you require a hair or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing, combined with nationwide test centers in all major cities, ensures accessibility. An ideal sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp, although body hair is acceptable. Our tests analyze substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for particular needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has become a more prevalent method for substance screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation programs utilize hair tests. They offer a longer detection timeframe of up to 90 days and require rigorous observation, making cheating exceptionally difficult. Urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a timeline for alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to around 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, added tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent mass of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. All other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.) are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, which integrates a sample into a lab’s database. This step also includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and handling, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not processed via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary method for checking for drugs of abuse. Screening is an economical choice to rule out drug use on most samples, but to be legally valid, a positive screen must be confirmed. Any samples flagged as likely positive during Screening necessitate a second confirmation step.

Should a sample appear positive after the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at a much lower concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging technique to conduct.

To verify any positive screening outcomes, Confirmation is carried out using methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair stipulations and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests can track drug use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests catch use over a shorter timespan.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair tests are hard to rig, which makes the findings more reliable.
  • Offer historical insight: They provide a timeline of drug consumption over time, not just the most recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't detect recent use: Drug presence in hair becomes visible after about 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug screening methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth patterns can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand without affecting the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Scenic, SD, when comparing hair follicle testing to urine analysis, the benefits are apparent. Hair testing boasts superior detection accuracy, revealing substance use over a longer duration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
